The Greenheart Project is designing and constructing low-cost, zero-emissions small cargo ships that use environmentally clean and sustainable sail and solar power, providing communities around the world with affordable means of transport. Such ships can help impoverished coastal and island regions improve their standards of living, while preserving their traditions and protecting the environment. In addition, we will use the publicity generated by such an inspiring enterprise, to promote Fair Trade, renewable energy and international cooperation.

Building sustainable boats with agrocomposites

Bio-composites are quickly becoming a viable option for composite building. Every country is experimenting with the ready available and cheaper crops, flax for Europe, kenaf for the USA and jute for Bangladesh. In the sailing world France is once again the leader, with shipyard and professionals already utilizing this cutting edge technology, and producing boats that able to stand the fatigue of an ocean crossing. This revolution has already started on different industrial and craft products such as speaker, tennis rackets and bicycles but boat building represent a frontier as the result would have to stand high standards of mechanical stiffness and resistance. Now we are in the beta version era but the results are encouraging and it seems that soon natural fibers could replace synthetic one, or at least work together in the composite building. It’s fascinating because it’s not only an exercise in eco-friendly style, but a sustainable alternative way to build boats.

The Ecoliner is created by people who believe in the power of wind and the need to increase wind-assisted sea transport options that can compete with existing ships. Our goal is to provide the missing link in sustainable sea transport by developing a multipurpose, hybrid cargo vessel which can sail a transatlantic route. Together with a number of partners, we have developed this concept of wind-assisted shipping which we have named the Ecoliner. It will be a next step in reducing toxic emissions and the use of fossil fuels.

“I want to draw attention to the wind ship project, in order to interest individuals and concerns, together with the government in proceeding to build a sailing freighter. Samples up to now: Clipper Stad Amsterdam, (Randstad and Amsterdam), Municipality of VOC Batavia, VOC Amsterdam, etc.)
There are six types wind ships drawn and digitally formed. The wind ships are based on sailing ships from the past, for two reasons. Firstly, they are real sailing ships and they are formed by the greatest naval architects, ever known in the Netherlands. And secondly, we can learn from and building on the past.
In the building stage innovation, one of the most important condition for sustainable construction, will be taken place. The ships will therefore be constructed using the most modern and lightest materials.
The lines of the ships have been adapted to modern resistance demands.
The rigging consists of trapezoidal tripod masts. The yards can run independently of each other. In shape and setting sail they are based on the Dyna rig. The gear is in this way very easy to handle by means of winches (electric or hydraulic) and inexpensive to construct.
The engine is hybrid propulsion.”
